Time for “Plan B” When it Comes to Climate Change

Insights

“Holding the increase in the global average temperature to well below 2° C above pre-industrial levels and to pursue efforts to limit the temperature increase to 1.5 °C above pre-industrial levels, recognizing that this would significantly reduce the risks and impacts of climate change.”

This is the vision behind Article 2 of the 2015 United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) “Paris Agreement,” which aims to counter the detrimental impact of climate change on our planet. If this goal is not met, in addition to extremes of weather, such as drought and flooding, we could see mass migrations of people, which could spark national and international conflict.

One organization is aiming to change all of this by bridging the gap between climate action and the long-term climate goal. A new non-profit organization, Plan B. Earth focuses on strategic, co-ordinated legal action as the way to do this. The web-site quotes from a recent judgment in the US, which explains the role of the courts:

‘The debate about climate change and its impact has been before various political bodies for sometime now … But the intractability of the debates before Congress and state legislatures and the alleged valuing of short term economic interest despite the cost to human life, necessitates a need for the courts to evaluate the constitutional parameters of the action or inaction taken by the government.’

Plan B. Earth is also using a .earth domain extension to help enhance its overall branding. By doing so, the organization can better support its mission of countering climate change through legal action, policy and legislation, as well as for helping the victims of climate change have access to effective remedies and protections.
