A new international study has revealed alarming projections for bowhead whales, iconic Arctic giants already challenged by centuries of whaling.
Researchers from the University of Adelaide and the University of Copenhagen analyzed 11,700 years of ecological data to understand how these whales have historically depended on sea ice, and what their future holds in a rapidly warming world.
The findings are sobering. As Arctic sea ice continues to decline due to climate change, bowhead whale habitat is expected to shrink by a staggering 75 percent by the year 2100.
Even more concerning, the remaining suitable habitats will lie outside the whales’ current range, making conservation efforts increasingly complex.
By combining paleo-environmental records and ecological modeling, the research offers new insights into the whales’ long-term behavior and habitat preferences. These insights strengthen predictions of future habitat loss and provide critical guidance for developing more effective conservation strategies.
