Corporations have long been central contributors to the climate crisis, and their role is only growing, with some now emitting as much greenhouse gas as entire nations. Yet many companies’ climate claims remain vague, untested, or crafted to impress investors rather than drive real decarbonization.
Clearly, what’s needed is transparent measurement. One example that could be used is the Carbon Budget Tracker developed by researchers from UQ, Oxford University, Princeton University and other institutions which translates climate science into a usable benchmarking tool capable of testing whether a corporation’s emissions trajectory truly fits within a global carbon budget aligned with 1.5 °C or 2 °C scenarios.
Rather than letting companies pick favorable metrics or start dates that make them look “Paris-aligned,” this tool applies cumulative, budget-based accounting, making it harder to hide behind vague claims and easier for investors, regulators and the public to assess actual performance.
This matters because dishonest or misleading disclosures, often labelled “greenwashing,” erode trust, delay effective action, and make it harder for policymakers and financial markets to distinguish leaders from laggards.
