Writing is on the Wall: Time for Companies to Embrace Climate Risk Disclosures

.Earth Domains Serve as Foundation for Communicating Climate Risks

Most major corporations are starting to realize that Climate Risk Disclosures are becoming real.

In late March, the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) proposed rule changes that would require certain climate-related disclosures in their registration statements and periodic reports. This includes information about climate-related risks that are likely to have a material impact on their businesses.

The SEC is also calling on companies to provide updates on their progress on meeting any climate pledges, as well as any use of carbon offsets or renewable energy certificates.

According to this recent Reuters article, the Climate Risk Disclosures program is currently under consultation, and there will be more guidance coming this month. Much of this effort is being driven by investor demand.

“Investors representing tens of trillions of dollars support climate-related disclosures because they recognize that climate risk can pose significant financial risk to companies, and investors need reliable information to make informed investment decisions,” said Gary Gensler, chair of the SEC, in the Reuters article. “Companies and investors alike would benefit from clear rules of the road. Our role is to bring consistency and comparability.”

Cervest.Earth is leading the effort to raise awareness around the need to make voluntary climate-related financial disclosure before it becomes mandatory. The organization recently published a report on how US- and UK-based corporate leaders are managing climate adaptation strategies.

As we have highlighted before, .Earth domains are ideal for developing Climate Risk Disclosure-related micro-sites that showcase a wide-range of content – from blog posts to white papers to company climate mitigation manifestos, and more.
