Underwater.Earth Reinforces the Need to Protect Our Oceans with Underwater Google Street View Effort

Insights

The vast majority of people don’t scuba dive or even snorkel, making it hard to really see the world that lives under our oceans and seas. As result, we miss out on understanding the negative impact of human behavior – from the dumping of trash to pollution and the ubiquity of plastics.

Of course, there are plenty of videos, documentaries and news stories that help to raise awareness about this problem. But, nothing shows us what is going on under the surfaces of our oceans in real-time … until now.

Founded in 2010, Underwater.Earth is a not-for-profit organization created by a group of ex-advertising and media execs who all share a passion for the ocean and a belief in the power of creative storytelling using innovative technology.

Underwater.Earth recently developed a unique underwater camera capable of revealing the oceans in Google Street View. As highlighted in this recent Digital Trends article, this effort helps to remind Google Street View users of the impact that humans have had on the environment with images that show bleached and dying coral, plastic, and so on.

Be sure to check out this video below about this program:

Lorna Parry, Co-Founder and Managing Director of Underwater.Earth, recently authored this Google Earth blog post in honor of World Oceans Day. The blog post showcases how this effort lets anyone enjoy the beauty of our oceans, but also wakes us up to the reality of human impact.

“Saving the ocean is not just about saving its beauty,” said Lorna in the blog post. “It’s also about saving the planet, and ourselves, from the effects of climate change. The ocean provides us with oxygen and food. It absorbs heat to stabilize global temperatures. It drives our climate and our weather. Shouldn’t we become better acquainted with the ocean and do our part to protect it?”

We applaud Lorna’s efforts, and are always excited to see how .Earth domain users are leveraging key innovations to help raise awareness, and ultimately protect our planet.
