The NASA International Space Apps Challenge recently announced the winners to its annual global hackathon event.
Each October, over the course of two days, coders, entrepreneurs, scientists, designers, storytellers, makers, builders, artists, and technologists from around the world come together and create in-person and virtual teams to solve challenges using open-source data from NASA and its Space Agency Partners.
Over the last few years, the NASA International Space Apps Challenge has allowed participants to use the .earth web domain to showcase their projects. Many participants use the Earth observation data to develop solutions to issues facing our world today.
While the .earth domain users did not make it to the winner’s list, one user did make it to the finals and we would like to congratulate them for their innovative program.
The finalist Bijr.Earth created an interactive web-based program aimed at middle schoolers, designed to educate them about climate change. It serves as an engaging tool for fostering a connection for children between water and climate, as “everything starts with water.” Learn more about their full submission here.
And we would also like to congratulate a team from Brazil who were named in the winner category of the NASA Space Apps Challenge this year. The team created a project called “Greetings from Earth,” which crafted an engaging narrative, one that emphasizes the paramount significance of Earth’s oceans and the often overlooked heroes of our ecosystem, which are phytoplankton.
The team accomplished this through the creation of an interactive website in which the user takes the role of an alien that receives a transmission from Earth. This transmission brings together graphics, 3D models, satellite images and a game quiz. It provides visualization of NASA data to make the user recognize the oceans not merely as vast expanses of water but as the gardens of our planet, regulating climate and nurturing diverse life forms.
