Surfing and Sustainability: Shredding Waves and Healing Our Planet

.earth Web Domain Users Embrace Love of Waves to Tackle Climate Change

The surfing community is often overlooked when it comes to advancing environmental sustainability efforts. In fact, many of those who are passionate about shredding barrels have a profound appreciation for our oceans and the planet in general.

They are also putting this passion into action.

For example, Colombia’s beautiful beaches have long been plagued by plastic pollution, particularly on the island of Tierra Bomba. But a local initiative is turning the tide on this issue, using the power of surfing to clean up the environment and inspire a new generation of environmental stewards.

Amigos del Mar, a grassroots organization, has launched the Olas Paz (Clean Wave) project, which is transforming plastic bottle caps collected from beaches into surfboard fins.

Last year, the group, comprised mainly of children, collected more than 7,000 bottle caps through community beach cleanups and local participation. These caps are recycled into surfboard fins, with each fin requiring around 18 bottle caps to produce.

Children who want to participate in surfing lessons must first attend their school classes, where environmental education is integrated into the curriculum. This initiative not only fosters a love of the ocean but also empowers children to take care of their environment.

The Clean Wave project is a powerful example of how surfing, education, and community involvement can come together to tackle plastic pollution.

Within our .earth tribe, we have several organizations that are incorporating surfing to help build a more sustainable planet, including:
