Big Tech Leads in Buying Clean Energy

Insights

Historically, large technology companies have been known to consume extremely large amounts of energy to process data, and run their operations.

According to the Financial Times, the combined power usage of Amazon, Google, Microsoft, Facebook and Apple is more than 45 terawatt-hours a year. New Zealand uses around this much energy annually. In addition, the rise of artificial intelligence and machine learning will also drive up overall compute power and energy usage.

The good news is that big tech is fully pivoting to clean energy.

According to a new report from the American Clean Power Association, the technology sector leads in clean power purchases with Amazon, Meta and Google emerging as the top three clean power buyers.

The report also found that overall corporations purchased nearly 20 gigawatts of clean energy in 2022, which is more than 4 GW higher than any previous year. This report comes on the heels of International Energy Agency (IEA) study, which points to clean energy ushering in a “new industrial age.”
