It seems that we may be at a tipping point, where renewable energy will finally become the norm.
A new report from Energy Innovation found that replacing coal power plants across the United States with renewable energy projects would save a considerable amount of money.
Specifically, replacing coal plants with local wind and solar would save enough to finance nearly 150 gigawatts of four-hour battery storage, over 60 percent of the coal fleet’s capacity. This would also generate $589 billion in new investment across the U.S.
In 2019, Energy Innovation pushed a similar report, which found that 70 percent of coal plants were more expensive to operate compared to new wind or solar. The new report points to 99 percent, and there’s only one coal plant in Wyoming to prevent that number from being 100 percent.
This new report comes on the heels of other positive news around renewable and clean energy. We recently highlighted how big tech is leading the way in buying clean energy, and clean energy is ushering in a new industrial age.
