Ever since Google Earth began to take hold in the mid-2000s, the concept of using geospatial and earth imaging data has grown into a viable industry sector that serves government, military, businesses and consumers worldwide.
As this sector has evolved, and the amount of satellite data has grown exponentially, one organization aims to harness the power of geospatial intelligence for humanitarian and environmental causes.
Earlier this year, Bill and Melinda Gates joined forces with Pierre Omidyar, founder of eBay, to fund the ‘Radiant Earth’ project, which is a new repository and archive of the world’s satellite, aerial and drone imagery.
The effort aims to combine and analyze Earth data and imagery, and offer it for free to “governments, NGOs, companies, developers, and entrepreneurs to build open source ecosystems that accelerate the use of earth imagery technology, and commercial adoption.”
As part of this ambitious effort, the organization has chosen to use a .Earth domain, and it’s official website address is Radiant.Earth. In 2016, we called on the geospatial sector to embrace the use of .Earth domain names to help enhance overall branding and reinforce the strength of this special community.
We would like to humbly think that the geospatial arena heard our call. Since the launch of the .Earth domain, we have seen organizations like Harris Corporation, Balloon.Earth, Esri, Blueturn.Earth, Planet911.Earth, and others adopt this highly effective branding tool.
Last year, the Voices.Earth blog also had the opportunity to speak with Harris Eisenberg, Executive Vice President at Thermopylae Sciences & Technology, about the rise and impact of geospatial solutions in nearly every aspect of our lives.
In addition, with the GEOINT 2017 Symposium coming up around the corner, this is the time of year when many geospatial players launch many new innovations and solutions – many that could benefit from landing pages and websites with .Earth domain names.
Fortunately, your geospatial organization can take advantage of a discounted offering for securing a .Earth domain name. Running through May 31st, our registrar partners are offering special pricing for one-year registrations of standard .Earth domain names starting at $8.90 USD.
