Could Edible Insects Be Key in Fighting Climate Change?

Insights

As the global population surges toward 10 billion by 2050, the demand for protein is expected to skyrocket, but meeting that demand sustainably is one of our biggest challenges.

Traditional protein sources such as beef, pork, and chicken put immense pressure on the planet, consuming huge amounts of water, land, and energy, as well as generating significant greenhouse gas emissions.

Enter edible insects.  Crickets, mealworms, and grasshoppers may not be dinner table staples yet, but they pack a serious punch when it comes to nutrition and sustainability.

Rich in high-quality protein, healthy fats, and key nutrients like iron and zinc, insects rival – and sometimes surpass – conventional meats in nutritional value. More importantly, they do it with a fraction of the environmental footprint. Crickets, for example, require far less feed and water than cattle and emit far fewer greenhouse gases.

Despite the benefits, cultural barriers remain. Many people still find the idea of eating insects off-putting, often citing disgust, unfamiliarity, or concern over taste and texture. However, when insect protein is incorporated invisibly into familiar foods – such as protein bars, pasta, or bread – people are more open to giving it a try.

Education and trust are critical to overcoming hesitation. When people learn how insects can support healthy aging and help protect the planet, they’re more likely to reconsider.

Within our .earth domain tribe, we have several organizations addressing alternative protein sources to combat climate change:

  • 2050.Earth: This organization wrote about how traditional meat products in some places could be replaced by delicacies made out of insects. Learn more here.
  • Viable.Earth: This organization has an article on how bugs can actually be delicious. Learn more here.
  • Earth: Golden Land Programme (GLP) wrote on how eating insects and fake meat reduces the negative impact of livestock on the planet. Learn more here.
