Perhaps it’s time to “Fight Back in the Name of Earth” again?
Back in November 2016, when Donald Trump was the President-elect, we launched a campaign called “Fight Back in the Name of Earth,” along with a .earth web domain sweepstakes in early 2017.
The campaign was a call to arms for everyone to step up and fight policies that are harmful to the planet. At the time, the impact of climate change wasn’t as obvious. We never expected having to bring this campaign back to life for another potential Trump term in office.
As election night looms next week, now’s the perfect time to take a closer look at why a second Trump presidency could be even more devastating this time around for climate action worldwide.
- Climate Denial Returns to the Oval Office: Trump has openly mocked climate science, calling it a “scam,” and would likely revive climate skepticism within his administration. This shift would undermine U.S. climate initiatives and embolden fossil fuel interests, stalling efforts to reduce emissions.
- Undoing Clean Energy Initiatives: Trump has vowed to cancel Biden’s climate-focused legislation, which supports clean energy, EV production, and green jobs. This would slow the transition to renewable energy, and a drill-heavy energy strategy would add billions of tons of greenhouse gases to the atmosphere.
- Reduced Support for Science: Under Trump, scientific voices may face marginalization. His team’s “Project 2025” outlines replacing civil servants with political loyalists, threatening scientific integrity and leading to a sidelining of climate research.
- Halted Global Climate Collaboration: Trump previously withdrew from the Paris Agreement, and a second term could see similar isolationist moves. This would reduce U.S. funding for climate-vulnerable countries and complicate global efforts to combat climate change, particularly with key players like China.
- Weakening Environmental Safeguards: Trump aims to cut emissions rules on vehicles and industries, weakening air quality standards. Courts initially blocked parts of his agenda, but with a stronger conservative judiciary, this rollback of protections could proceed swiftly.
