Quake.Earth: The Premier Earthquake App for iPhone, iPad and Apple Watch

Insights

The United States Geological Survey (USGS) estimates that there are several million earthquakes that occur each year. While many of these events go undetected, the USGS expects about 16 major earthquakes to happen in any given year – with 20,000 overall being tracked.

Although, based on current data, the USGS can predict the probability of when and where an earthquake will happen. However, there is no crystal ball to actually predict an earthquake.

For example, scientists believe that within the next 30 years, there’s a 67 percent chance that a major earthquake will hit the San Francisco Bay area. In addition, others believe that Oregon will experience a magnitude-8 quake in the next 50 years.

Thankfully, in the face of this uncertainty, a new mobile app is allowing anyone to have relevant and timely earthquake data right at their fingertips. Called Earthquake, the app offers push notifications from multiple worldwide data sources, an interactive map, and is available for iPhones, iPads and Apple Watches.

With more than 1 million users, Earthquake has become the number one destination for seeking out information and alerts about these global events. The popularity of the app reinforces how people want to be updated (in real-time) when an earthquake occurs, especially in areas where loved ones may be living.

What also caught our attention is that the app developers decided to use a .Earth top-level domain extension for the main website of the app. In addition, they decided to brand the URL as “quake.earth,” which is a concise way of showing the seriousness of the app, and how it ties to the major phenomenon of earthquakes on our planet.

Quake.Earth serves as an ideal case study for any organization that has the word “Earth” in its name. Rather than seeking out a .com domain, a .Earth domain better reinforces the brand, and offers a creative way for communicating how your organization is related to or helps planet Earth.
