HiveandHollow.Earth Helping the Planet, One Flower at a Time

Voices

Ironically, the flower industry is not known for being sustainable and environmentally-friendly. Many of the flowers are grown in South America and Africa, and have contributed to devastating deforestation and water pollution, and workers are often treated unfairly and subjected to harmful pesticides. In addition, the energy used in shipping the flowers from these regions is significant.

In order to provide flowers in an ethical and sustainable way, Sarah took her 25-year passion of flowers and created HiveandHollow.Earth. With her guidance, the company is now part of a small number of concerned florists that are part of the emerging slow flower movement. Like the slow food movement (sourcing local, seasonal foods), floral professionals and consumers are looking at ways to reduce their carbon footprints.

However, this is still fairly revolutionary, as HiveandHollow.Earth is the only flower shop in her region to commit to these practices, but Sarah hopes more will follow.

By using a .Earth domain, Sarah also feels that it helps to spread awareness of the environmental impact of flowers, and so much more.

I believe that taking small steps can make a big difference – that’s why using a .Earth domain made so much sense to me,” said Sarah. “We also need to start looking beyond the .com domains, so we can identify those companies and organizations taking steps to help our environment.”
