Is Greener Shipping on the Horizon?

Normally when one thinks of forms of transportation that emit large amounts of greenhouse gases into the air, automobiles and planes immediately come to mind.

However, cargo shipping should be added to that list. It is responsible for nearly 3 percent of global greenhouse gas emissions – producing almost as much carbon each year as the aviation industry does.

To hit its mid-century decarbonization targets, the maritime industry needs commercially viable zero-emission vessels operating on deep-sea trade routes by 2030. But determining ways to get there hasn’t been easy. Although harnessing the wind can help, ships still need a more constant source of energy to travel over large oceans.

To accomplish this, the maritime transport industry is looking at everything from more efficient hull shapes, new propulsion systems, and alternative carbon-neutral fuels such as hydrogen or ammonia that can be portable. For example, by switching to ships that use green methanol, a single ship can produce 100 fewer tons of greenhouse gas per day, an amount equivalent to the emissions of 8,000 cars.

Within our .earth web domain tribe, we fortunately have several organizations working with greener shipping methods to reduce the industry’s carbon footprint:

  • HubOcean.Earth: The organization brings leaders from science, tech and governments together to unlock ocean data across all sectors. At the core of this work is a tool that makes it easier to share, collect, store and work with ocean data, the Ocean Data Platform. Learn more here.
  • Systemiq.Earth: The organization unlocks system change by developing trusted, wholehearted partnerships with leaders in civil society, innovative investors, government, business, and finance, including working with zero emission shipping projects. Learn more here.
  • Stand.Earth: The organization scores the carbon footprint of the fashion industry including with greener shipping.Learn more here.

Is your organization working on solutions to advance green shipping? The .earth web domain is ideal for enhancing your brands and communicating your mission of using promising new greener technologies in shipping to cut greenhouse gases.
