Failure to Address Political Influence and Environmental Justice
Since March, the topic of Climate Risk Disclosures has come more into the forefront as a method for corporations to become accountable in addressing today’s climate challenges.
Driven by the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), this effort would require certain climate-related disclosures in their registration statements and periodic reports. This includes information about climate-related risks that are likely to have a material impact on their businesses.
While many in the environmental community are applauding Climate Risk Disclosures, there are some critical aspects that are not being addressed, according to a recent CleanTechnica article.
For example, the SEC rule fails to address political influence, which includes disclosing political activity, including direct and indirect election spending and lobbying. A driver of this is knowing if fossil fuel companies are funding third-party groups that undermine science-based decision-making, which has been a common practice over the years.
In addition, the article pointed out how the rule does not require companies to include information about how they are addressing environmental justice, as well as how they plan on addressing unsafe working conditions.
